Homeschooling vs. Pandemic Schooling

In a matter of days, we went from normalcy to uncertainty. It came as a surprise for most of us when schools shut their doors and moved all teaching to the online space. Every education establishment felt the squeeze from this move, including homeschool families. While our world wasn’t quite as disturbed as the kids enrolled in brick and mortar schools, my mama heart hurt for the turmoil they faced.

When we decided to homeschool, we took time to research, pray, and consider all of the options. For the parents thrust into pandemic schooling with barely a 24 hour notice, I’m sure it felt like drinking from a fire hydrant.

Fast forward a few months and the stress is higher than ever. When will our kids go back to school? Should they go back to school? How do we protect them from the virus? How do we protect teachers from the virus? Should we homeschool?

Friends, I do not have the answers to those questions. Chances are, our leaders don’t have answers to those questions, although they are trying to figure it out. Here’s what I can answer for you. Homeschooling does not look like pandemic schooling. With homeschooling, you have the freedom to choose everything! Your child does not have to stay online all day to learn. Use real books and read together as a family. Search curriculum websites by grade to pick out your schoolbooks. Watch documentaries on subjects that interest your child. Pinterest has a wealth of information – we even have a homeschool board!

If you decide that homeschooling is the best option for your family (I personally think it is a fabulous option), then we are here for you! For our northeast Florida friends, we compiled a post to help you easily find your notice of intent and portfolio requirements. If you aren’t in Florida, we are still happy to help you get started. Leave us a comment, email us, or DM us on Facebook or Instagram and we will help find the requirements for your county/state.
